What Is Courier Insurance?
Courier insurance is designed to protect you as a courier, as well as the vehicle you drive and the cargo you transport. Obtaining the right type of courier insurance for you depends on the type of business you run.
There are particular risks associated with this type of work where your cargo could be lost, stolen or damaged in transit and you’re visiting multiple locations in a hurry. Any policy should also protect you against the risks you pose to other road users as well as their vehicles, property and persons. Courier insurance from Tradex can provide all that cover and more. Do I Need Courier Insurance?
If your van and cargo play an essential part in your business then you must have the right type of cover in place. Even if you use your personal car to deliver time-sensitive parcels then courier insurance is necessary as private car, motorbike or van insurance will not provide adequate cover for this specific type of use. That could leave you dangerously exposed.
Courier insurance is designed to protect you against the unique risks you face. That includes:
- Making multiple stops during a single trip
- High levels of daily mileage
- A range of cargo types of different values
Courier insurance can also include public liability, employers’ liability and a wide range of different cover types to protect you against every eventuality. Find out more by reading our FAQs.
What Type of Cover does Courier Insurance Provide?
If you work as a courier then you need to put courier insurance in place to protect you against the particular risks you face. Courier insurance can include goods in transit cover, which protects the items you deliver should they be lost, damaged or stolen, and road risks cover to protect other road users in the event of an accident.
If you have employees then you are legally obliged to put employer’s liability insurance in place. Public liability cover can also be included as part of a cost-effective courier insurance policy that could protect your business from claims by members of the public who are injured or suffer a loss as a result of your work.
Other extras include:
- European cover
- Breakdown and accident recovery
- Excess protection
- Protected no-claims discounts

Is Courier Insurance Mandatory?
Courier insurance is essential for anyone who drives for a living and regularly delivers goods to customers. Courier insurance premiums tend to be more expensive than private vehicle insurance. That’s because there are additional risks associated with the high mileage, making multiple stops and working against the clock. Thieves are also aware that couriers often carry valuable goods, which is why the Ford Transit is the most frequently stolen vehicle in the UK.
While no one likes to fork out for insurance, failing to put courier insurance in place could bring a premature end to your business if you were involved in an accident or your vehicle or goods were stolen. Read our FAQs to find out more.
How does Courier Insurance Work?
Courier insurance is not a one-size-fits-all product. At Tradex, we understand that every business is different, so we work with you to create a policy that provides the protection you need, without wasting a penny on cover that’s not necessary. We also urge you to check that you don’t already have relevant cover from another source that might protect you against certain risks and save you money. Read our FAQs for more.
What Level of Courier Insurance Cover Do I Need?
When choosing the right level of cover for you, it’s important to consider that couriers spend most of their time on the road, which increases your chances of being involved in an accident or suffering loss. The levels of cover available include:
- Third party only – This is the minimum cover required by law and will protect third party liabilities in the event of an accident.
- Third party fire and theft – Includes the same cover as third party only with the addition of protection for fire or the theft of your vehicle.
- Comprehensive – Provides the same cover as third party fire and theft but also protects you and your vehicle for any damage sustained as a result of an accident.
